Eliza felt like a queen, her hand in Rafe’s and his lips adhesived to the top of it. This was their first small party as a couple. She had invited her sister to one of her favorite bars close to where Jeanne lived because she had not been out of her apartment, her city or her own love since she had been married. So a cab ride, hand in Rafe’s like it was now the entire time. The cab driver had turned around to look at them and gawk.
“You are such a gorgeous couple,” he said in a heavily accented voice, and Rafe kissed her cheek like he had been kissing her hand.
“I am the happiest man in the world since this gorgeous woman married me,” he said looking into her eyes.
Eliza grinned so hard she thought her teeth would break. Rafe practically carried her out of the car and down the stairs to the almost hidden little bar. They sat in the almost secret back room, looking at each other with almost secrecy. Jeanne told her that she was bringing someone. Feeling romantic and in love like she had been, Eliza pried until her sister confessed that she had been pretty much loved up as well. But that was all she would say about the mystery man, which had Eliza pretty much at the brim wondering who her sister’s mystery man was.
Eliza felt a sense of deja vu, when again in a dark bar she saw Terrence. She froze in place, but this time Rafe noticed right away. He turned to the door, and she felt his body mirror hers. Frozen like a sculpture, they both looked at Terrence who would trigger negative feelings for both of them for different reasons…who was flanked by Jeanne who Eliza saw like she had the veil pulled to reveal her face at the lounge that they left the night that Rafe proposed.
But even with that happy memory, Eliza still felt frozen looking at her ex and her sister. They could not have thought that she would have no feelings at all seeing them together.
When she stopped feeling frozen, she felt on fire…the deep breath she took felt like dragon fire and she was out of control…
