Jeanne held Terrence’s arm, his bicep was compelling and she needed his strength as they walked into the back room of the bar. Eliza and Rafe at first had looked like a very happy couple. Upon seeing them enter, they looked frozen and stoic.
She and Terrence ventured forward, and Jeanne bent to kiss her sister’s tight cheek. Eliza’s eyes darted back and forth between the two of them accusatory.
“You do love to keep all the surprises for yourself don’t you Jeanne?” Eliza inquired coolly.
“I had not seen you since we started going out, and I did not want to tell you on the phone or by text,” Jeanne responded without rancor, even though it was being dished out.
“It really would not have made a difference—unless you really wanted to make me uncomfortable and see it in person.”
“You are the happiest woman in the world, you just got married and Terrence is your ex. I did not think.”
“No, you did not think! Of course I would want to see my ex while having dinner with my sister! That my sister could not wait for my sloppy seconds!”
Jeanne slapped Eliza, and Terrence pulled her back.
“You selfish bitch! How long is everything going to be about you? Rafe said you were not like this before your accident, before the pills but all it has been since your recovery is you wanting everyone to satellite about you. Fuck this Eliza, I am tired of it.”
Eliza gaped first at Rafe, and then at Jeanne.
“I do not need a sister. I did not have one this long, and I do not need one now! Happy Terrence?” she started without looking at him, while Jeanne and Terrence stared at her. “You ruined another relationship for me. Thanks!”
“Eliza,” Terrence started.
“No!” Eliza thundered. “You do not speak to me ever again!”
Eliza buried her face into Rafe’s chest.
Jeanne walked away with Terrence.
