The look on Josephine’s face, let Eliza know something was off. The back of the dark-haired man facing the bartender, let her know that Josephine was trying to warn her.
Rafe did not turn around, and Eliza decided to bite the bullet. She knew that he was not going to be like she was when she saw Margaux unexpectedly. He and Oscar were like oil and water. But she decided that she was going to attack first.
She was not sure if Oscar recognized her fiancé, but she took his hand and then stood next to Rafe.
“Laphroaig neat,” she said to Josephine, and the smell of the smoky amber liquor warmed her.
Rafe put his arm about her waist.
“My phone traced you here,” he said softly. “I was in a cab, and I got out of it to find you.”
“Hi,” she whispered, and placed her hand around her glass. “I am here with Oscar.”
The smooth scotch evaporated on her lips. As she started growing older, Eliza liked her liquor neat. Plus Rafe and Oscar drank their drinks neat, and she picked it up from them.
Rafe turned around to look at Oscar. He looked much calmer than she had ever seen him look with Oscar before. He nodded curtly, and then looked back at Josephine. Rafe raised his empty glass.
Eliza’s lips were still swollen from kissing and though she had put herself together well enough, it was clear that she and Oscar had been intimate. She saw her face in a mirror in the distance, and the sight of her post-coital appearance aroused her.
Rafe looked at her, and she saw a smokiness in his eyes that competed with the smokiness of her scotch. The scent of smoke was redolent, and she was intoxicated by it.
Oscar grabbed her ass, and she looked at him. She looked at Rafe and Josephine. Josephine had a suggestion of a smile on her face.
Eliza took another sip of Laphroaig…
