“You’re my sister!”
Eliza folded her napkin and hands on her lap as she stared at Fiona, who she had planned to have lunch with even after their impromptu meeting at the bar a few nights before.
“I love you Fiona, but…I do not want to get in the middle of this. Why don’t you ask Alice? Nothing should be off limits between the two of you, you have been together for a long time,” Eliza implored.
Fiona glared at Eliza.
“I am asking you, you are my sister and blood is thicker than water. Unless you want to, or are sleeping with this buxom Josephine. You do sleep with your friends…”
“Maybe you want to, and that is why you are projecting on Alice?!”
Eliza rarely lost her cool with Fiona, as much as she pushed her. But this last thing that she said was too provocative, and a slur against her and Oscar.
“I’m sorry Liza, but I need to know what is going on. I needed to know if Alice is seeing someone else…”
“Did you ask her?”
“I tried to, but I ended up not asking her. She was so defensive, and I had been drinking. So we went to bed. But I expected you to tell me what you know…”
Eliza unfolded her hands, and picked up her napkin. She cut a forkful of quiche, and let the savory bite with herbes de provence melt on her tongue.”
“Go ask Alice, this is not my place Fiona. I would not ask you about something I should ask Rafe. Rafe and I are fearless now, we can talk about anything…”
Eliza knew she had hit a nerve. There was a time when she could not talk to her fiancé about anything, Fiona knew that more than anyone else.
But as she swallowed and sought another bite of savory quiche, Eliza knew why she really did not want to tell Fiona what she knew. How could she tell her what Josephine had told her?
Josephine had been flushed at the bar, the next time Eliza went there to see her. Josephine adjusted her tie anxiously, and let her fingers slip unconsciously in the gap between buttons on her blouse where you could almost see her buxom chest that Fiona had commented on.
It seemed that Alice had not been able to keep her hands off of Josephine in the bathroom. Josephine could not resist at first, but then she left Alice there.
“It was hard for me to do that Eliza, but I had to. To get control of myself you know? But touching her is like a drug. I can still smell her, feel her, taste her…”
Eliza knew that feeling, she knew what it was like to fall in love…how could she tell Fiona what she knew, and make her fall out of love?
I am dedicated to using all the verbs from the verb list created by Richard Serra—you can find the list here. Last time I used “crease,” today I am using “fold.”
